The Community Standards Enforcement Report was recently released by Facebook for April and June 2020 which specify the use of technology for reviewing and moderating content, especially for COVID-19.
The report detected 95 per cent of proactive accounts than 89 per cent earlier. By this technology, Facebook will be able to take action and remove posts before reporting by users. Besides that, it took action against 22.5 million hate speech content in comparison to 9.6 million in January-March 2020.
Aniruddh Nigam, Research Fellow, Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy confessed that for effective transparency country-specific data should need to be released. But it is difficult for the global figures. The increase in action from Facebook is for all countries or it is limited for the US and about the assessment that Facebook is dealing with misinformation in India like the US.
Prashant K Roy, Tech Evangelist & Policy Expert also said that India is very concerned about fake news which is responsible for serious consequences in the country like online harassment, spreading violence against minorities of all kinds (vulnerable communities/gender/religious minority) and other threats. There are a few posts where the legal action was taken. The minority groups can be easily removed because less number of people need to report about the content.
To overcome the freedom of speech and expression at the time of social media we need to depend more on technology than human involvement.
Facebook reported that because of the COVID-19 pandemic human moderated content became impactful and the process of restoration may offer adequate opportunities for the appeal decisions.
Facebook became independent of any third party to involve in audit the numbers published by the Community Standards Enforcement Report. It is a big announcement and step in the right direction that Facebook has taken.
